Peter Weevers

Peter Weevers was born of a Scottish mother (Cameron) and an English father (although it came to light that his father's paternal origins proved to be more mysterious) in Gidea Park, Essex, England. After five years of illustration and design at the South East Essex School of Art, and a year in London illustrating for an advertising agency, Peter left his homeland.

He first moved to Holland where for three years he worked as an art instructor in Amsterdam. After diverse adventures, he left for Paris where for a year he freelanced as an illustrator for various publishers and film producers (whilst learning French at l'Alliance Française). Then he drove south, to Monaco, again to work as an art instructor. Here he was to meet his future wife and creative companion. After a year they left together for Amsterdam where during three years they established themselves as illustrators in promotional and publication fields. This was to blossom to international reputation.

Hesitating between England and France they finally settled in Les Alpes de Haute Provence where their daughter was born (Tilia, who modelled for his Alice, has since become a highly accomplished artist, musician and composer).

Peter now lives in Les Alpes Maritimes, between sky and mountains. To his residence he created a small gallery "Momento", a reference to time. It is also under his name in mirror image, a simple clin d'oeil to retrospection, printing and publication. Undeniably his style is English, with its characteristic discipline and humour, but there is also the trace of the other horizons and cultures he has seen, experienced and appreciated. It is this particular style that enabled Peter to establish an international reputation. His interpretation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, for example, is recognised by the prestigious Lewis Carroll Societies in England, Japan and the USA as one of the major visual interpretations of Lewis Carroll's master piece.

Other successful publications include 'The Hare & the Tortoise',  awarded by The Child Study Association of Children's Books of the Year 1986, and Herbert Binns & the Flying Tricycle winning the '1990 Parent's Choice Award', USA). For some years his illustrations were chosen by Prince Rainier of Monaco to be used for posters for the International Festival du Cirque de Monte Carlo.

Parallel to water-colour illustration Peter has always been interested in photography and the possibilities of combining the two media to create a particular effect and desired expression. Amongst his other creative interests one can also include, writing and sculpture.
